#15 - Saint Peter’s Catholic Church - 101 South Second Street and 115 South Second Street (219)
Dixon’s first Catholic Church was named after the leader of the 12Apostles. It was a wooden structure built in 1868 at 101 South Second Street. A parish house was built in the early 1890’s. The church building lasted forty years before it was deemed no longer adequate. At the end of the block, a foundation was formed for the present-day church.
Construction began in 1915 at 105 South 2nd Street and was completed in 1916 at a cost of approximately $25.000. The foundation stone shows the year 1915 and is plainly seen by the steps as one enters the church.
The baptismal records show the first baptism in the newly formed parish was on November 4th, 1877. The infant’s name was Joseph Silva, son of Joseph, and Francisca Silva of Elmira. Church records document Andrew Byrnes and Michelle Smith were the first couple to be married in the Catholic Church.
The Catholic church was erected in 1868 and located on second street. The congregation at that time was very small, but it has been steadily growing until in 1886 the building had to be enlarged. It is very handsomely furnished and is presided over by Revered Father P Heslin in 1887.
