#33 Dixon Drug / Torchia's / Kirby Drug Store

#33 Dixon Drug/Torchia’s/Kirby’s Drug Store – 127 North First Street (312)

Torchia Fountain set for open house Saturday – The public is invited by Frank and Betty Torchia to attend an open house this Saturday which will mark their taking over the former Otto Scheel store which they will operate under the name of Torchia’s Fountain.

Adults are invited to drop in for coffee and doughnuts, and children will receive ice cream and balloons.

The Torchia’s will continue with delicatessen items, candy, fountain service, newsstand (San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle) and have added coffee and doughnuts and cold and hot sandwiches. They are planning other improvements for variety and the convenience of customers.

Frank was formerly manager of the Poultry Producers plant in Dixon. He and his family, prior to moving into their new apartment, had resided at Mayes and Second Street.

Mr. and Mrs. Scheel have moved into their new home on East A Street following their retirement from business.

Nehan Brother’s owned a Greek restaurant before Dixon Drug purchased the building.

A Kirby’s Drug Store – The building was moved from the old town of Silveyville circa 1870. Before it burned, it was located at 1st and A streets where the Odd Fellows building stands. Abraham Kirby sought a druggist position at Tafton Drugstore. The first name of the drug store owned and operated by W A Trafton was California Drugstore and Abraham was the druggist. In 1880-1882, Abraham served as Solano County Sheriff. Later this pharmacy was owned by Sneed and Abraham Kirby. Helene Kirby Rohwer recollects that in the fire of 1883, the hottest fire was in the California Drug Company because the basement was filled with house paint.
