# 32 Masonic Lodge
#32 - Masonic Lodge 165 North First Street (250)
After being chartered in Silveyville in 1869, the Lodge Hall was moved to its present location in 1873. And although the original building burned down in 1883, and needed major repairs after the 1892 earthquake, it still houses Silveyville Lodge #211 today.
William VanSant's Grocery Store in the 100 block of First Street west side of street below the Masonic Hall.
On the far left are Bert VanSant and Frank Van Sant, William's sons. Far right is William Miller VanSant (1840-1908)
Early 1900's. William was born in Richland Township, Iowa to Alonzo Monroe VanSant (1801-1883) and Mary Elizabeth Woodington (1806-1880). Alonzo and Mary had six boys and a daughter.
This building was constructed around 1892. With its bracketed cornice and tall, hooded windows, it was a shorter but more elaborate companion to the Masonic Hall next door. The original detailing was stripped away by 1946, and the post war look disappeared when the storefront was remodeled, and plastic siding installed. The appearance of the building does not reflect its original look or the one of fifty years ago. Due to the alterations, the building does not appear to be eligible for the National Register or the California Register.
